Route 66

Publication Redesign

Nostalgic, Vintage
Route 66 is a redesign of a New York Times Magazine. I drew inspiration from the isolating feeling of the American Southwest. I used bright colors to represent the neon signs that populate the roadsides.

During this project, I learned how to let the photography take the lead in print design. In many of my past projects, I focused on making the typography the main visual element, but with this magazine, I realized the photography was essential to telling the story. The images were already dramatic and visually powerful on their own, so I approached the typography as a supporting element that could enhance, rather than compete with, the photos. I also wanted the layout to reflect the symmetry and balance within the imagery, which led me to create a clean and minimal design system.
